Writing - Tufts' two required short-answer questions are found in the Short-Answer Questions section of our member questions. You must select a school/program in the Academics section before the appropriate set of questions will appear. Here you will find more information about our short-answer prompts.

SAT/ACT Tests - Tufts University is test-optional. You can decide whether you want your SAT and/or ACT scores to be considered as a part of your application. Please share your plans with us by answering the question found in the Academics section of our member questions. Once your answer is selected and application submitted, your decision is final. Note: All applicants whose primary language is not English must submit proof of English proficiency, unless a student has been enrolled in an English instruction school for at least three years. For those wishing to have SAT/ACT test scores considered - Tufts has made the decision to hide the SAT and ACT test scores on the Common Application PDF for all students applying, regardless of whether you wish to have scores considered. This means that if you self-report your standardized test scores, you will not see them on the PDF preview of your Common Application. However, even though they will not be visible to you, those test scores will be part of the data our admissions team receives, and they will be visible as part of your application.

Visual Art Portfolio - A visual art portfolio is required for applicants to the BFA or the Combined Degree (BFA + BA/BS) program at SMFA at Tufts. This portfolio is to be submitted via the Digital Portfolio tab in the Tufts Applicant Status Page, which you will be sent after your application has been received.

Letters of Recommendation - In general, Tufts requires applicants to submit 2 letters of recommendation: one from a school counselor and one from a teacher. However, students who are applying to the Combined Degree (BFA + BA/BS) program are required to submit 3 letters of recommendation: one from a school counselor, one from a teacher of a core subject class, and one from an art teacher.
